Varicose Veins Treatment

Varicose Veins

Varicose veins indicate chronic venous insufficiency, which involves malfunctioning vein valves. Your veins carry blood up to your heart and vein valves close to prevent blood backflow, but blood collects in the veins when these valves become defective and blood to reflux towards your feet. The extra blood stretches the vein walls, leading to varicose veins.

Other signs of chronic venous insufficiency include edema (swelling), skin discoloration, ulcers (open sores), and leg heaviness.

Some of the main risk factors for chronic venous insufficiency include carrying extra weight, being over 50, living a sedentary lifestyle, experiencing hormone fluctuations, and having a history of vascular problems.

Treatment of varicose veins typically involves a combination of closure of the refluxing saphenous vein with ablation (Radiofrequency ablation or Laser) or glue (VenaSeal), hook phlebectomy of the superficial varicose veins and foam sclerosis of deeper varicose veins and incompetent perforators.

Chronic Deep Vein Thrombosis

Chronic deep vein thrombus is a clot that is over one to two months old. The clot becomes harder and scars the vein. The vein can be dramatically narrowed or completely blocked off in a lot of cases. This prevents blood from flowing readily back to your heart.

Patients with chronic deep vein thrombosis experience leg swelling, pain, exercise intolerance and often skin discoloration of the leg below the knee. These patients are typically prescribed compression stockings in order to help with these symptoms. These symptoms are related to the vein being blocked and not allowing blood flow out of the leg.

We specialize in utilizing a variety of new techniques to re-open veins that have been blocked for years. We have opened up veins that have been blocked for over a decade, with significant improvement in the patients’ symptoms.

To open up the blocked vein, we typically access an open part of the vein above or below the blockage. We then inject dye into the veins (Venogram) and use Intravascular Ultrasound (IVUS) to study the anatomy, flow dynamics and sites of blockage. Using balloons and stents, we then open the blocked or narrowed vein. The procedure typically takes 30-90 minutes and is done under sedation through a small hole in your skin.
