What Our Patients Are Saying:
What are Non Healing Wounds?
At the Leg Pain and Vascular Institute, we provide definitive treatment for venous stasis ulcers involving varicose veins and chronic deep vein thrombus.
Chronic Deep Vein Thrombosis
Chronic deep vein thrombus is a clot that is over one to two months old. The clot becomes harder and scars the vein. The vein can be dramatically narrowed or completely blocked off in a lot of cases. This prevents blood from flowing readily back to your heart.
Patients with chronic deep vein thrombosis experience leg swelling, pain, exercise intolerance, open sores (ulcers) and often skin discoloration of the leg below the knee. These patients are typically prescribed compression stockings in order to help with these symptoms. These symptoms are related to the vein being blocked and not allowing blood flow out of the leg.
We specialize in utilizing a variety of new techniques to re-open veins that have been blocked for years. We have opened up veins that have been blocked for over a decade, with significant improvement in the patients’ symptoms.
Varicose Veins Treatment
To open up the blocked vein, we typically access an open part of the vein above or below the blockage. We then inject dye into the veins (Venogram) and use Intravascular Ultrasound (IVUS) to study the anatomy, flow dynamics and sites of blockage. Using balloons and stents, we then open the blocked or narrowed vein. The procedure typically takes 30-90 minutes and is done under sedation through a small hole in your skin.

Frequently Asked Questions
What are non-healing wounds?
Non-healing wounds are sores or ulcers that fail to heal within several weeks, often due to poor circulation, venous disease, or underlying vascular conditions.
What causes venous stasis ulcers in the legs?
Venous stasis ulcers are caused by chronic venous insufficiency, where damaged vein valves allow blood to pool in the legs, leading to swelling, skin breakdown, and open sores.
Why do leg wounds fail to heal on their own?
When blood flow out of the leg is impaired—due to varicose veins or chronic deep vein thrombosis—oxygen and nutrients cannot reach the tissue, preventing proper healing.
What are the symptoms of venous stasis ulcers?
Common symptoms include leg swelling, skin discoloration, heaviness, pain, and open sores near the ankles that may drain or worsen over time.
How are non-healing wounds evaluated at Leg Pain and Vascular Institute?
At Leg Pain and Vascular Institute, advanced imaging such as venograms and intravascular ultrasound (IVUS) is used to identify vein blockages, reflux, and circulation problems contributing to poor wound healing.
What treatments are available for non-healing wounds and venous ulcers?
Treatment may include vein ablation, VenaSeal, foam sclerotherapy, phlebectomy, or balloon angioplasty and stenting to restore healthy blood flow and promote wound closure.
Can treating varicose veins help heal leg ulcers?
Yes. Treating underlying varicose veins and venous reflux often significantly improves circulation and allows chronic wounds and ulcers to finally heal.
Where can I get treatment for non-healing wounds in Houston or surrounding areas?
Leg Pain Clinic treats patients from Houston, Baytown, Sugar Land, Cypress, Katy, Richmond, Rosenberg, and nearby communities with specialized venous and wound care.
Are treatments for venous stasis ulcers covered by insurance or Medicare?
Many venous procedures are covered by insurance or Medicare when non-healing wounds or ulcers are medically necessary. Our team assists with insurance verification.
When should I see a vascular specialist for a non-healing wound?
If a leg wound has not healed after several weeks, continues to worsen, or is associated with swelling or skin changes, it’s important to see a vascular specialist promptly.
